News from ORP

The Opticon RadioNet Pilot (ORP) is one of the European Commission's "pilot" programmes under the EC H2020, launched in March 2021. This four-year project brings together 37 institutions to support and develop seamless access to radio and optical facilities. Through various processes, ORP brings together radio and optical astronomers to create a stronger community to better exploit the opportunities of multi-wavelength science and benefit from each other's expertise. Find out about latest news of the project:

New ORP assistant project manager

A project assistant Chloé Lambert from CNRS started in mid-September following Hélène Dworak departure during summer. She is working together with the scientific coordinator Stéphane Basa, from CNRS, Marseille.

Official Inauguration NOEMA

In 2014, NOEMA first antenna was inaugurated. Eight years after, the major astronomical project is now complete: since 30 September NOEMA is officially the new major facility for radio astronomy in Europe. Stéphane Basa and Chloé Lambert, ORP coordinators, participated in the inauguration of NOEMA in Super Dévoluy, France. For the occasion, the "Astronomy Village" event was organized on 1-2 October and attracted more than 1000 people over the weekend.

ORP Mid Term Review

The ORP Mid Term Review was organized in Milan (Italy) on 14 October 2022. It was the occasion for various member of the ORP team to meet, including the EMT and some Work Package leaders. A project overview and updates of the first period regarding the different Joint Actions and WP were given by the speakers in charge.

ORP Consortium meeting

At the end of November,  the ORP Consortium Meeting - hosted by SKAO headquarters at Jodrell Bank (UK) in the South of Manchester - took place. Organised following similar model than the previous Telescope Director Forum in 2021, the Consortium meeting aims at reviewing the project activities and structuring future goals. It takes advantage of different partners of the consortium being present: WP leaders and members, Board/Exec members, owners of the infrastructures, funding agencies, management and guests. The ORP Consortium Meeting allowed everyone to become aware of the project developments, to provide inputs to possible solutions, and to shape the future steps.

ERIS 2022

Over 70 students from all over the world participated in the 9th European Radio Interferometry School (ERIS 2022), funded by the ORP Project and hosted by JIVE and ASTRON in Dwingeloo (the Netherlands) between 19 - 23 September 2022. Read more information here

NEON Observing School

Twenty students from 10 countries participated in the 2022 NEON Observing School, funded by the ORP Project at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP) in Southern France on 2-14 October 2022. Read more information here.

ALMA Science Archive School

The ALMA Science Archive School - sponsored by the ORP project and organized by the European ALMA Regional Centre Network - was held on 5-7 October 2022 at the CNR Research Campus in Bologna, Italy. The school aimed to present an overview of the ALMA Science Archive, of the most advanced tools to exploit the archive content for science, and a discussion of possible tricks to address mining issues. IRAM Interferometry School

The 11th IRAM millimeter interferometry school was held on 21-25 November 2022 at the IRAM headquarters (Grenoble, France). It was organized for students, post-docs and scientists who wanted to acquire a good knowledge of interferometry and data reduction techniques at millimeter wavelengths, with a special emphasis on the NOEMA interferometer and its new capabilities. Multi-Messenger Astrophysics Workshop (MMAW)

In continuation of the Multi-Messenger Astrophysics Low Latency workshop of Paris, the Multi-Messenger Astrophysics Workshop (MMAW) was organized at the European Gravitational Observatory of Pisa. The workshop presented a review of the opportunities for multi-messenger astrophysics in key observatories of Astrophysics and Astro particle Physics of the current and next decade. The EU call for proposals "HORIZON-INFRA-2023-SERV-01-02" was discussed as a potential joint response for multi-messenger astrophysics.

Workshop Wavefront sensing in the VLT/ELT era VII

The 7th Wavefront Sensing workshop - funded by the ORP Project - was held in Porto, Portugal, on 19-21 October 2022 with the participation of over 100 astronomers. The in-person meeting counted with the participation of 68 researchers mostly from Europe but also from North America and Australia. Remote connection was provided to additional 44 unique participants.  Read more information here.
