Using the EVN: An e-workshop

JIVE is organizing the second online training event for using the EVN with an aim to support first-time users of the network. This training will guide participants through various steps involved in planning, proposal preparation, and scheduling EVN observations.

The training will take place on

Thursday 25 April 2024 from 10:00-17:00 CEST

Other time zones: 04:00-11:00 EDT, 08:00-15:00 UTC, 16:00-23:00 CST, 18:00-01:00 AEST

All segments of the training assume no prior knowledge of radio astronomy techniques, VLBI or using the EVN. Participation is free for everyone, but registration is mandatory.

EVN User Support

Join the Training!

The training will be conducted online over Zoom. Mattermost will be used for follow-up discussions and interactions with the participants. You will receive the details about how to join the Zoom training via email a few days before the actual date.

In addition to learning all about proposal preparation and EVN scheduling, it would be a great opportunity to discuss your EVN issues with the Support Scientists.

Timeline

Thursday 25 April 2024 10:00-12:30 CEST (08:00-10:30 UTC)
General introduction to the EVN

Do you want to know more about the European VLBI Network and why it is the most sensitive Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) array in the world observing at centimeter wavelengths?  This segment is meant to take you along the possibilities that the EVN offers to any astronomer to observe their sources at milliarcsecond resolution.

  • Get to know the EVN and how these observations can take your science to a new level.
  • Summary of the science cases being done with the EVN.
  • Observatory capabilities.
  • Observational modes.
  • Support provided by JIVE.

Proposal Preparation

Are you interested in applying for EVN observations to study your sources but you have many doubts and questions? Join this training! You will receive an overview of all the proposal-preparation steps, and you will be able to discuss the what's and how's, with the EVN Support Scientists.
This part will be divided into the following steps:

  • The EVN Observation Planner.
  • How to make a proposal. From the science case to the proposal submission.
  • The Northstar online proposal tool.

Thursday 25 April 2024 14:30-17:00 CEST (12:30-15:00 UTC)
Schedule Preparation Training

You already got observing time with the EVN but you are not sure how to produce a schedule file? This training will guide you on how to schedule EVN observations.

  • What is needed to schedule an EVN observation? What data and information do we require from you?
  • pySCHED and how to create a schedule file.
  • Optimizing the schedule and what to be aware of.
